The 'Design Brief' was to create a modern home for a growing family, Mom, Dad and their 2 year old son (they have since added twin sisters!) The open plan dining room, kitchen and lounge flows from a double volume entrance past the indoor braai are through the bar area, out onto the pool patio. Because of the limited property size, we went underground with almost 300m of basement space, consisting of a gym, hobby room, home theatre and a wine cellar with a window looking into the pool!
How is this for interesting? The 'Design Brief' was from the Headboy and Headgirl - the Schreuders - at my High School - when I was in Grade 10! 25 Years after school! They loved the area and neighbours, but their family home had gone past its expiry date! We modernised the look and feel, replacing all the windows and creating new bedrooms and bathrooms for their two (now young university students) children. Their rooms connected to a comunal study den with an airbridge. Over the airbridge, I positioned a 9 X 3m, 800mm wide skylight, in the form of a cross, letting in light and love! We also dug into the mountain to create an extra double garage for the young adults' vehicles. With the help and input of the Headgirl, the interiors were created in ultra modern finishes, yet we kept their newly renovated kitchen almost intact!
The Moodliars were wonderfully patient clients whilst they were watching their dream home come to life. No expense was spared to make this one of the most beautiful and modern homes in the neighbourhood.
